What the noise actually is
When hard water is heated, dissolved calcium and magnesium come out of solution and settle as a crust on the bottom of the tank. The burner or lower element then has to heat through that crust. Water trapped underneath flashes to steam and pops through the sediment — the same physics as a kettle, which is why plumbers call it kettling.
The U.S. Geological Survey puts it plainly: when hard water is heated in a home water heater, solid deposits of calcium carbonate form, and that scale "can reduce the life of equipment, raise the costs of heating the water, lower the efficiency of electric water heaters, and clog pipes." Manatee County's 2025 testing found total hardness of 106–279 mg/L — up to 16 grains per gallon — which the USGS classes as hard to very hard.
Is it dangerous?
Not in the sense people fear. The temperature-and-pressure relief valve on the tank is what guards against a pressure failure, and sediment does not defeat it. The real costs are quieter: an electric lower element buried in sediment overheats and burns out; a gas burner spends longer running to heat the same water; and the tank bottom, cycling hotter than it was designed for, corrodes from the inside. A heater that has kettled for years fails earlier than one that was flushed.
The one warning sign to take seriously is the noise stopping on its own after years of getting louder — that can mean the sediment has compacted into a solid layer, and flushing may no longer clear it.
The fix, and when it is too late for it
A flush drains the tank through the bottom valve and stirs the sediment out with fresh water; Rosco Plumbing charges $100–$150 and checks the anode rod and relief valve at the same visit. Done annually it keeps the tank quiet. Done for the first time on a ten-year-old heater it sometimes cannot help: the drain valve clogs with the very sediment it is trying to pass, or the flush clears the noise but exposes a bottom that has already thinned. At that point the honest advice is the repair-or-replace decision, not another flush.
A homeowner can flush a heater with a garden hose and the instructions on the tank label; the parts of the job that go wrong are a drain valve that will not reseal afterward and a relief valve that starts weeping once it has been operated. When to stop and call a licensed plumber
- The drain valve will not open, or will not close and reseal after a flush.
- The relief valve discharges water after being operated, or the noise is accompanied by water under the tank.
- The heater is more than 8–10 years old and has never been flushed — a flush may reveal a tank at the end of its life, and you want the replacement range quoted at the same visit.
- Rumbling comes with rusty hot water, which means the tank lining is corroding, not just scaling.
