Dry traps: the guest bath, the floor drain, the seasonal home
Every drain has a U-shaped trap that holds water, and that water is the only thing between your house and the sewer gas in the drain line. Water in a trap evaporates in a few weeks of disuse. A guest bathroom, a laundry-room floor drain, a wet bar, a second shower — any fixture nobody has run lately is the first suspect. The test is the fix: pour a quart of water down it. If the smell fades within an hour, that was it.
Manatee County Utilities' own odor fact sheet makes the same point from the other direction: most "rotten egg" reports it receives turn out to be bacteria in a sink trap, not the water. Their cup test — catch the first water from the tap in a glass before any goes down the drain, and smell the glass — tells you whether the odor is the drain or the supply.
The toilet wax ring
A toilet sits on a wax ring that seals it to the drain flange. When the ring fails — the toilet rocks, the floor was retiled, the flange is cracked or below the floor — sewer gas seeps out around the base every time the room's air pressure drops. The clues: a smell that is strongest at floor level near the toilet, a toilet that moves when you push it, discoloured or soft flooring at the base, or a smell that got worse after a bathroom remodel.
Resetting a toilet on a new ring is a $100–$175 repair if the flange is sound; a broken flange or a rotted subfloor is more, and it is the reason to stop rocking the toilet and call. If the toilet is old enough to be replaced anyway, a new comfort-height unit installed is $250–$500.
Vents, and the version that is really the sewer
Each drain line is vented through the roof so air can follow the water. A vent blocked by a bird's nest, leaves or a collapsed section pulls air — and gas — back through the nearest trap instead, which is why a toilet gurgles or a shower drain burps when something else drains. That is a roof or an in-wall problem, not a homeowner one.
The smell that is actually the sewer: a broken drain line under the slab or in the yard, or a main line backing up. Signs are a smell outdoors near the cleanout or over the sewer path, ground that is wet or greener than the rest of the lawn, and slow drains throughout the house at the same time — the whole-house drain guide covers that. When to stop and call a licensed plumber
- Refilling the traps and running every fixture does not clear the smell within a day.
- The toilet rocks, the floor around it is soft, or the smell is strongest at the base — the ring and possibly the flange need a plumber.
- The smell comes with gurgling from other fixtures or slow drains — that is a vent or the main line.
- The smell is outdoors over the sewer path, or there is standing water at the cleanout.
- Anyone in the house has headaches or nausea with the smell: ventilate, leave, and call — hydrogen sulfide at high concentration is a hazard, not just a nuisance.
